Best Time for a 4D Baby Scan

When Is the Best Time to Get a 4D Baby Scan?

    By Dr Kan, Future Baby

We get asked this almost every day: "When should I book my 4D scan?" It's a fair question, because timing genuinely changes what you'll see. Come in too early and your baby hasn't quite got the features yet. Leave it too late and there's less room for them to move — which is really the whole point of a 4D scan.

So here's the honest answer, based on what we see on the screen every week.

The sweet spot: weeks 26 to 30

Most of the time, we tell parents to aim for somewhere between 26 and 30 weeks. You can still get a lovely scan a little earlier or later than that — the full window really runs from about 24 to 32 weeks — but that middle stretch tends to give the best results.

Why? A few things line up at this stage:

    • Your baby has enough fat under the skin by now to look, well, like a baby — proper cheeks, a defined nose, that sort of thing.
    • There's still plenty of fluid around them, which is what lets the probe actually "see" a clear face rather than a shadow.
    • They're still small enough to have room to stretch, yawn, or turn towards the camera.

Push much past 32 weeks and space gets tight. Baby drops lower, tucks into position, and sometimes spends the whole appointment with their face turned to the wall or their hands in front of it. It happens — it's just harder to get the shot everyone's hoping for.

Twins and triplets are a bit different

If you're expecting more than one baby, we usually bring that window forward to somewhere around 20 to 26 weeks. Two or three babies share space fast, so we try to scan while there's still enough room to see each of them clearly.

What can still throw things off, even in the right window

Even in that ideal stretch, a handful of things affect how clear the images come out:

    • Position. If baby's facing away, or has a hand parked in front of their face, we might not get the full view — sometimes literally to the minute of the appointment.
    • Placenta. An anterior placenta (sitting at the front of the womb) can soften the picture a bit.
    • Fluid levels. Lower amniotic fluid gives us less to work with.

None of this means a bad scan — it just means baby's calling the shots that day, not us. A short walk beforehand, or something cold and sweet to drink, sometimes nudges them into moving.

    Is it actually safe?

Yes. A 4D scan is built on exactly the same ultrasound technology as your standard 2D or 3D scan — we're just capturing it live instead of as a still image. Ultrasound in pregnancy has been standard practice for decades with no known risk to you or your baby.

    Our honest recommendation

If you want the best odds of a clear, memorable scan, book for around week 26 to 28. It gives you a bit of buffer — if your baby's being shy on the day, there's still time for a free rescan before the window closes.

Our Wellbeing + 4D Scan and 4D Premium Package are both built around this timing, and both come with a free rescan if baby doesn't cooperate the first time.
