4D Baby Scan Leicester: Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
There is something rather special about seeing your baby move for the first time.
You may have already seen those tiny movements on a 2D scan, but watching your baby stretch, move their hands or turn their face towards you can make pregnancy feel suddenly very real.
A 4D baby scan in Leicester gives you the opportunity to see your baby's movements and features in real time, while creating photographs and memories that you can treasure long after your appointment.
At Future Baby 4D, we provide private pregnancy scanning experiences for families who want to see more of their baby during this exciting time.
But if you've never had a private 4D scan before, you may be wondering when to book, what happens during the appointment and what you can realistically expect to see.
So, let's take a look.
What exactly is a 4D baby scan?
A 4D scan uses ultrasound technology to produce three-dimensional images of your baby while showing movement in real time.
Unlike a traditional 2D image, which is essentially a flat picture, 4D imaging can give you a much more lifelike view.
Depending on your baby's position, you may be able to see:
Your baby's face Little hands and feet Movements and stretches Facial movements Your baby's position Different angles of their face
Sometimes you'll see a beautiful image straight away.
Other times your baby may decide that this is the perfect moment to hide their face!
And that's completely normal.
When is the best time to have a 4D scan?
There isn't one magical week that guarantees perfect images for every pregnancy.
The best time can depend on several things, including your baby's position, the amount of fluid around your baby, the position of the placenta and simply whether your little one is feeling cooperative on the day.
Many parents choose to have their 4D scan later in the second trimester or during the third trimester, when facial features are becoming more developed.
If seeing your baby's face clearly is particularly important to you, it's worth discussing the timing with your scanning clinic before booking.
Can you find out your baby's gender during a 4D scan?
This is something we're asked about regularly.
A 4D baby scan and a gender scan are different services, although some appointments may offer both depending on the package and gestation.
Gender identification can depend on your baby's position, gestational age and image quality, so it shouldn't be treated as an absolute guarantee.
If finding out your baby's sex is your main reason for booking, a dedicated gender scan may be the better option.
What happens during a 4D scan?
Your appointment should feel relaxed rather than rushed.
Your sonographer will normally talk you through the appointment and explain what you can expect before starting the scan.
You'll be made comfortable while the ultrasound examination takes place.
One of the lovely things about a 4D appointment is being able to watch your baby moving on the screen as the scan happens.
You might see them stretching, moving their arms, opening their mouth or even putting a hand near their face.
And yes — sometimes they really do seem to know when everyone is watching!
What if my baby's face isn't visible?
This is one of the most important things to understand before booking a 4D scan.
Your baby doesn't know that you've booked an appointment!
They may be facing towards your spine, have their hands over their face, or simply be in a position that makes it difficult to obtain the images you'd hoped for.
This doesn't automatically mean that anything is wrong.
Ultrasound images can be affected by your baby's position and a number of other factors.
A responsible clinic should therefore avoid promising that every appointment will produce a perfect facial photograph.
Our aim is to obtain the best images possible on the day.
Is a private 4D scan a diagnostic scan?
No — and this is an important distinction.
A private 4D scan offered for bonding, reassurance or keepsake purposes should not be regarded as a replacement for your routine NHS antenatal care or a diagnostic ultrasound examination.
Your NHS maternity team remains responsible for your routine antenatal care.
If you have concerns about your pregnancy, such as bleeding, pain or reduced movements, you should contact your maternity team or appropriate healthcare service rather than relying on a private keepsake scan.
At Future Baby 4D, we believe being clear about what a scan can and cannot provide is just as important as the images themselves.
How do you choose a private 4D scan clinic in Leicester?
With so many private scanning providers available, it can be tempting simply to choose the cheapest appointment.
But there are a few other things worth checking.
Look at the sonographer
Find out about their qualifications and experience.
Look at regulation and governance
Consider whether the clinic operates under appropriate regulatory and governance arrangements.
Check what is included
A £70 scan at one clinic may include something very different from a £70 scan somewhere else.
Read the reviews
Don't only look at the star rating. Read what previous parents actually say about their experience.
Ask what happens if images aren't possible
A good clinic should explain its policy clearly.
Look at the equipment
Modern ultrasound equipment can contribute to the quality of the images, although technology alone doesn't guarantee a good scan.
